What to expect: The NeuroVisual™ Exam

Learn how our specialized NeuroVisual™ Exams help diagnose and treat BVD at Eyes For Life in Spokane, WA.

How is Binocular Vision Dysfunction diagnosed?

Although studies suggest that at least 20% of the population lives with Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD), it remains one of the most underdiagnosed conditions.
Part of the reason is that the subtle misalignment causing BVD usually isn’t detected during a standard eye exam.

At Eyes For Life in Spokane, Dr. Maier has advanced training in the highly specialized process of identifying and treating BVD.
During your visit, Dr. Maier may screen for and recommend a separate Neurovisual examination.
This advanced assessment detects even minor misalignments and allows us to prescribe custom microprism lenses that realign your vision and significantly reduce symptoms.

Most of our patients experience noticeable symptom relief — often around a 50% improvement — by the end of their very first visit.
With an additional progress assessment, we continue to fine-tune your prescription as your eyes and body adjust, further improving your comfort and overall results.

What tests are performed during a NeuroVisual™ Exam?

A NeuroVisual™ Exam is much more thorough than a typical eye exam.
Our team evaluates not only how clearly you see but also how well your eyes work together to create one unified image.

During your NeuroVisual™ Exam at Eyes For Life in Spokane, we assess:

  • Eye movement
  • Eye teaming and tracking
  • Eye focusing
  • Binocular fusion
  • Balance and gait stability
  • Posture and neck alignment
  • Interplay between eyes and ears
  • Visual convergence
  • Visual-spatial awareness
  • Blood pressure and heart rate
  • Depth perception

This comprehensive approach helps ensure we uncover the true root cause of your symptoms.

Can I still have BVD with 20/20 vision?

Yes, absolutely.

Having 20/20 vision only measures how well each individual eye can see an image clearly — it does not assess how effectively the two eyes work together.

Many patients who are diagnosed with BVD have “perfect” 20/20 vision in each eye when tested separately.
However, their eyes are misaligned when working together, leading to the strain, dizziness, headaches, and other symptoms they’ve been experiencing.

Our NeuroVisual™ Exam at Eyes For Life specifically looks at binocular function — how your eyes coordinate — and customizes microprism lenses to relieve the symptoms caused by misalignment.
